After developing his signature technique in the early 1440s, he moved away from his stone sculptures working mostly with terracotta, and passed the technique on to his nephew Andrea della Robbia and great-nephew Giovanni della Robbia. The Italian Renaissance was a time of artistic re-birth and innovation which has yet to be repeated. One of these innovations was made by the sculptor Lucca della Robbia of Florence. He discovered and perfected the technique of galzing terracotta and applied it to his already famous reliefs of Madonna and Child. What resulted was instant success for his work, and a ceramic dynasty still alive in Italy today.
